This giant breed of medium proportions is extremely powerful and muscular but never anything but well proportioned and fine-boned. Longhaired but not overly so, despite their bulk, Pyrenean Mastiffs do not appear heavy or sluggish.
Large, solid and moderately long.
Rectangular, very strong and robust, exuding great power but supple and agile, too.
White with a well defined mask, sometimes with patches of the same color as the mask over the body.
Medium-sized, hanging, triangular and flat, set higher than the line of the eyes.
Thick at the root, set medium high, strong, supple, abundantly furnished with hair forming a beautiful plume.
Dense, thick, medium length.
Pyrenean Mastiffs are ideal for guarding rural properties and people. These easy to train dogs are friendly, calm, noble and especially intelligent. Strangers will be met by a brave and ferocious dog that stands its ground come what may; other dogs will meet a good-natured creature that is fully aware of its strength. Pyrenean Mastiffs are accomplished fighters if need be, drawing on all the skills they have acquired as a breed in centuries of combat with wolves. Their bark is deep and low, their expression alert.
There is no upper height limit and it’s very much a case of the bigger the better, as long as the proportions are right. On the other hand, the lower height limits are very conservative and should preferably be exceeded by some margin. Males above 31½ inches are preferred, while females should preferably be over 29½ inches.
